I recently went in for my 3D/4D sonogram and was amazed by how much my little baby looks like me! She made the same facial expressions and even slept the same way I do with my hands all contorted and in my face. It really got me to thinking about how genetics are truly astounding.

When I look around at my colleagues’ desks I see pictures of their children and grandchildren. I love how you can tell that those children belong to those people. I can see the same eyes, ears, nose, and general head shape. I find it particularly interesting when you can see the grandparents in the grandchildren. I know it makes all the sense in the world: “Duh, kids look like their families”, but it never really hit me until now how cool it is.

Not only do children look like their parents/grandparents/aunts and uncles, they act like them too. My nephew acts a lot like his mother and I. He’s all over the place and doesn’t like to sit down. At school his teacher decided that it was fine for him to stand next to his desk and kind of rock back and forth on his feet, if it helps him concentrate better. When my sister and I were children, I remember always standing and rocking like that when we were supposed to sit down at the dinner table and eat. My mom would let us because otherwise we would never get it done.

It’s also somewhat surprising when you look in the mirror and you see your mother looking back at you! All my life I knew I looked like my mom but sometimes it catches me by surprise. Not only do I look like her but I sound a lot like her also. We have the same powerful laugh that you can hear from outside a bomb shelter. 🙂

I have a very large family and its fun to go through pictures of my aunts, uncles, and cousins and see what parts of us are similar. I look a lot like my aunt and cousin when they were younger. My sister has the same body type as most of my dad’s family and I got my mother’s side of the family. Its crazy how my sister and I look alike, but then at the same time look nothing like each other.

I’m so excited to see my little girl in person! I can’t wait to watch her grow up and see what traits she picks up from me and from her father.
